Alternative to TYPO3

Free software and a standard-bearer for European digital sovereignty. The architecture, the support and the connectors tell another story.

The Verdict

TYPO3 is an open source CMS with almost 25 years of track record, deeply established in government and German-speaking universities, with a European digital sovereignty argument no other competitor in this market matches. For universities evaluating platforms in 2026, the context matters: the core is free, but there is no native API (the community headless extension is still at release candidate stage for the current LTS version), no native SSO, no packaged connector to academic systems, and TYPO3's own security team has published, between 2025 and what has passed of 2026, far more core advisories than WordPress — figures that contradict much of what tends to be assumed about TYPO3 without checking.

TYPO3 has an argument no other competitor in this collection can make: it is European free software, with no proprietary cloud, almost 25 years of track record and a very solid position in the German public sector. For a European public university with procurement requirements on data sovereignty, that isn’t marketing: it’s a tender criterion. What follows doesn’t dispute it — it examines what has to be assembled around the free core to have a complete university platform.

The architecture

The headless layer that still isn't stable

TYPO3 is a PHP monolith by default: backend and frontend coupled in the same system, the same architectural family as WordPress. It has included Symfony components since 2015, which tidies the internals, but the Core is not API-first.

The specific detail matters more than the label. JSON content delivery depends on friendsoftypo3/headless, a community extension, not an official TYPO3 GmbH product. We checked Packagist today: its latest version for the current v14 LTS is 5.0.0-rc1, published in May 2026 and still at release candidate stage. The extension’s most recent stable release goes no further than TYPO3 13.

Translated: if you want to consume TYPO3 as a data source for your own frontend, an app or an AI assistant, today you do it on a community component that hasn’t yet declared stable support for the version TYPO3 recommends installing.

Griddo is born headless: API-first with GraphQL and REST, separate public and private APIs, cloud-native and serverless. The cost

A free core, and a sum of pieces around it

Precision matters here, because the pattern from the other comparisons doesn’t apply. TYPO3 is not an opaque model with pricing behind a form: the core is literally free, the only €0 in this whole market. That’s a real virtue.

What there isn’t is a single figure to compare. The cost is spread across pieces:

  • Agency implementation: €700-1,400/day in the DACH region, based on individual agency rates. No independent market survey exists, and outside DACH there is no standardised rate.
  • Software support: free support for each LTS lasts three years. After that, if you need to keep receiving patches, you enter ELTS: €2,800-3,200/year, publicly priced.
  • Hosting: not in any TYPO3 GmbH price. Contracted with one of its 63 certified partners, or self-hosted.
  • Higher Education package: from €4,800 (1 institution, 1 year) to €49,000 (partner, 15 institutions, 5 years).

And no independent analyst TCO study exists. The only document presenting itself as one comes from a headless migration agency —a direct conflict of interest— and contains an ELTS figure that contradicts the verified official price.

Griddo publishes four plans from €1,500 to €5,000/month, additional sites at €150/month and €7,500 for implementation, with hosting, support and maintenance inside. The versions

Three years of support, then the invoice

TYPO3’s cycle is predictable and well documented, which is an advantage over platforms that improvise. But it has an economic consequence worth seeing before signing: free support for each LTS version lasts three years. After that, continuing to receive security patches requires paying for ELTS.

In other words: either you plan a major version migration every three years, or you take on an indefinite maintenance subscription for software whose licence is free. A zero licence cost doesn’t remove the cycle, it puts a date on it.

In Griddo there are no versions to plan and no end-of-support dates: the platform updates continuously and maintenance is in the subscription. It’s the same mechanism we analyse in the vendor lock-in myth vs. the version lock-in reality, which affects free and proprietary software alike.

What has to be assembled

SSO, CRM and AI live in third-party extensions

TYPO3 has an enormous ecosystem —around 9,327 extensions in the TER— and much of its strength lies there. There’s also the flip side: for a university, three capabilities usually taken for granted are not in the Core.

SSO and SAML are not native. All federated authentication depends on third-party extensions: miniOrange for SAML, waldhacker for OAuth2/OIDC. There’s even a package with Shibboleth-oriented defaults, the dominant protocol in academic federations — but it’s one more component to install, maintain and update.

There are no named CRM connectors. Neither HubSpot nor Salesforce: those integrations are resolved with bespoke development through an agency. For academic systems (Slate, Banner, Workday Student) we found no packaged extension either — though let’s be fair here: Griddo doesn’t ship a named SIS connector either, and no CMS in this market does. The difference is in CRM, where Griddo does have five native connectors.

AI is outside the Core by explicit decision. TYPO3 GmbH’s CTO stated it in June 2025: only interfaces will enter the Core, so each organisation connects its own provider. The real functionality lives in TER extensions (T3AI, AI Suite, AI Bridge). It’s a stance consistent with their philosophy, and on one point it goes further than expected: AI Bridge generates an llms.txt following the llmstxt.org specification — a genuine parallel to Griddo’s GEO work. But it’s one third-party extension among nine thousand, not a platform capability.

In Griddo, SSO, CRM connectors, AI and the three GEO formats —llms.txt, markdown and OKF bundles— come with the platform, on a single invoice and with a single party responsible for keeping them working after every update.

The security

An uncomfortable figure worth reading in full

TYPO3 is assumed to be more secure than WordPress. The data doesn’t confirm that so directly, and this is the point on the whole page where it matters most not to stop at the headline.

TYPO3’s official security team published at least 22 core advisories in 2025 and 21 more so far in 2026 — considerably more per year than the 1-7 annually that Patchstack documents for the WordPress core.

And now the nuance, which cuts the other way: TYPO3 issues a numbered advisory for virtually every fix, including many defence-in-depth ones, while WordPress folds much of its patching into minor releases without publishing an equivalent advisory. A high advisory count is, to a large extent, a transparency signal — not proof that the software is worse. That’s why this row ends in a draw in the comparison below, rather than in Griddo’s favour.

What is directly comparable, and applies to both: the vast majority of high-severity vulnerabilities are not in the core but in third-party extensions. And that’s the connection to the previous point: the more capabilities live in extensions —SSO, CRM, AI, headless— the larger the surface someone has to keep patched.   • TYPO3 has no named connector for marketing CRM (HubSpot, Salesforce): those integrations are resolved with bespoke development through an agency. Griddo has native connectors for HubSpot, Salesforce, Dynamics 365, Zoho and Pipedrive, with real-time sync and contact enrichment via Apollo.
