Alternative to Drupal
Unlike WordPress, analysts do classify it as an enterprise CMS. Real usability, enterprise cost and academic integrations tell another story.
The Verdict
Of all the open source alternatives Griddo has compared so far, Drupal is the one that comes closest to competing in the same analyst category: both G2 and Gartner Peer Insights classify 'Drupal' directly as Web Content Management, with no separate enterprise brand required — something WordPress, catalogued as a Website Builder, cannot claim.
It has real, well-documented strengths: native multilingual support, a permissions model more granular than almost any other CMS, a headless architecture mature since 2019 (JSON:API), and a markedly better security record than WordPress.
But for a university evaluating platforms in 2026, three fronts tell a different story from the one that record suggests: real usability — Capterra scores its ease of use at 3.5 out of 5, well below its own average, and half of recent TrustRadius reviews describe the interface as unintuitive —; enterprise cost — Acquia publishes pricing for its entry plans, but the only plan with the SLA and scale a large university needs falls back into the same opaque 'contact us' we already saw with WordPress VIP —; and academic integrations — despite a more mature API architecture than WordPress, neither Acquia nor Drupal.org names a single real SIS or LMS with a dedicated connector anywhere in its higher education documentation.
And the very university adoption figure Drupal uses to sell itself — today, three different versions in circulation (70%, 71%, 80%) with no independently verifiable methodology behind any of them — is itself a symptom of the pattern: the argument sounds more solid than it holds up to a line-by-line check.

Let’s start with something other comparisons skip: Drupal is a good product. It’s the open source alternative that comes closest to competing in the same category as Griddo — G2 and Gartner Peer Insights classify it as Web Content Management, not as a website builder — it has multilingual support in the core, a permissions model more granular than almost any CMS, mature headless since 2019 and a security record far above WordPress. A 4.3 out of 5 on Gartner Peer Insights isn’t handed out. Nothing below disputes any of that: what follows examines what it costs a specific university to operate it in 2026.
The editing
Publishing without a developer, not publishing once there is one
Drupal’s aggregate score on Capterra is 4.2 out of 5. Its specific ease-of-use subscore is 3.5 — a wider gap than WordPress. TrustRadius points the same way: 50% of recent reviews describe the interface as unintuitive, “often requiring extensive technical knowledge”. A senior corporate content editor at The Home Depot puts it from exactly the seat this page is written for: “I would only recommend Drupal for developers or programmers. I would not recommend it for editorial purposes.”
Drupal has answered that criticism, and it’s worth being precise here because there’s a fair amount of noise about it. Drupal Canvas is genuinely open source: GPL 2.0 licence, hosted on Drupal.org, covered by the Drupal security team, installable via Composer on any Drupal 11.3 onwards, and the default builder since Drupal CMS 2.0. You don’t need to be an Acquia customer. Version 1.0 shipped in December 2025 and it’s already on 1.10. Dries Buytaert himself puts it in perspective with a candour we appreciate: it “helps us catch up with other page builders more than it helps us leap ahead.”
The useful question for a university isn’t whether Canvas exists, but what it leaves out. And what it leaves out is precisely what holds a faculty ecosystem together: design system management and brand governance. Acquia deliberately keeps those in Site Studio, a paid add-on on Acquia Cloud, and has stated they’ll stay there because they are “features that Drupal Canvas will not support”. Translated into budget: visual editing is free; the design governance that stops twenty faculties ending up with twenty different websites is not.

The cost
Public pricing, until it starts to matter
Acquia deserves credit for something Squiz and WordPress VIP don’t do: it publishes entry pricing. Personal from $148/month, Small from $296/month. That’s real transparency on the first step.
The problem shows up exactly where a university sits. The Enterprise plan —the only one with a guaranteed 99.95% SLA, high availability, horizontal scaling and dedicated WAF/CDN, that is, the only one viable for an ecosystem of dozens of sites— publishes no figure at all. It links to “contact us”. And beneath that invisible figure sit further line items that aren’t there either: enterprise-grade search requires Acquia Search or a third-party layer such as Funnelback (the route UCL took), and design governance requires Site Studio. None of the three has a public price.
No independent analyst audits Drupal’s aggregate TCO. The only third-party estimate with an explicit methodology we could find comes from an agency specialising in Drupal —an interested party, not a neutral referee— and puts total three-year cost at between 1.7 and 2.6 times the initial build cost. On a $300,000 platform, that’s $540,000-720,000.

The integrations
Mature API architecture, zero academic connectors
Drupal starts with a real technical advantage here and it should be said: JSON:API has been native since 2019 —predating the WordPress REST API— and GraphQL is available via module. Drupal.org officially documents a production frontend ecosystem (Next.js for Drupal, Lupus Decoupled, Octahedroid, NodeHive). As an integration architecture, it’s solid.
And even so: Acquia Exchange catalogues 230 integrations and not one sits in an SIS or LMS category. No Banner, no Workday Student, no Colleague, no PeopleSoft, no Moodle, no Canvas. Every named integration is generic MarTech, e-commerce or DAM. SSO/SAML depends on community modules with no vendor support.
Let’s be fair, because this figure lends itself to being read worse than it is: Griddo doesn’t have an officially named connector for Banner or PeopleSoft either, and no DXP in the sector has one out of the box. It’s the market norm, not a Drupal weakness. The practical difference lies in what does come solved: Griddo ships native connectors for HubSpot, Salesforce, Dynamics 365, Zoho and Pipedrive with real-time sync, and academic systems integrate via configurable webhooks. The architectural capacity to integrate is not the same as a specific, named, supported connector.
The versions
The cycle that turns an update into a project
Drupal 7 reached end of life on 5 January 2025, after fourteen years. Drupal 10 will do so in December 2026. Moving from one major version to the next isn’t updating: the architecture changes enough to make it a rebuild.
The best example doesn’t come from Griddo, it comes from a Drupal customer. The University of Waterloo is currently migrating 950 sites from an 1,100-site installation, precisely because of that end of life. It’s a case Drupal publishes on its own site as a success story —and technically it is— but it’s also the exact illustration of the recurring cost any self-hosted platform takes on: every major version cycle opens a migration project that has to be budgeted, staffed and delivered.

The scale
Multisite without a technical ceiling, with a governance ceiling
This is the row where Drupal draws, and on merit. There’s no documented technical limit to the number of sites in Multisite and, unlike WordPress, it can use a separate database per site, which avoids the shared-table bottleneck. The cases back it up: University College London manages more than 500 microsites from a single panel with unified login; North Dakota State University consolidated almost 300 scattered sites in under a year, with a Lighthouse score of 99.
The limit doesn’t appear in the architecture, it appears in governance. In 2024 the University of Michigan banned new self-hosted CMS installations —naming both WordPress and Drupal compromised on its infrastructure— and required existing ones to migrate to a managed platform. A scattered ecosystem without active central management becomes a liability, with Drupal as with anything else.

The security
Good record, but you apply the patch
Drupal wins this comparison against WordPress comfortably and without argument: in studies of compromised sites it accounts for just 1-2% of detected infections, versus around 95% for WordPress. It has had a formal security team since 2005 and publishes advisories in a predictable window, on Wednesdays.
The nuance that changes a business decision isn’t in the record, it’s in how responsibility is split. Drupal’s official policy is explicit: patching is the site owner’s responsibility, not the project’s. Between January and mid-July 2026, 12 SA-CORE advisories were published. One of them, SA-CORE-2026-004 of 20 May, is a highly critical SQL injection in the database abstraction layer, exploitable by anonymous users and with exploit code already documented. A good record doesn’t apply patches: a team does, on time, across every site in the ecosystem.

Not exactly, although it is closer than WordPress. But Drupal's own core is a content management framework, not an experience platform with personalisation, analytics and AI consumption built in from the start: the layer that aspires to that full category is Acquia, with added personalisation and DAM products, not Drupal on its own.

It is a figure that varies depending on which Drupal source you consult, and none of them survives an independent methodology check. Drupal.org's live marketing says '70% of the world's leading universities'. A community study by TheDropTimes (2024) says '80% of the top 100 universities' — but it is a manual count by volunteers, and the article itself admits it is still being completed. And there is a third figure, 71%, circulating in other industry sources. None of the three has a public, auditable methodology behind it.
