It isn’t a question of academic quality. It’s that your website isn’t ready yet for an AI to read it, understand it and cite it.

The four elements your website needs to get cited

1. Structured, semantically rich content

Language models don’t browse your website the way a person does. They read text and extract meaning. For them to understand who you are, what you offer and why you’re relevant, your content has to be organized explicitly.

In practice: program pages with complete data (duration, format, graduate profile, accreditations), institutional pages with verifiable factual information, and FAQs written as direct answers. AI favors content that already arrives in the shape of an answer.

It’s worth checking where that information lives, too. When a program’s data only exists inside a PDF, a form or a closed system, AI crawlers never reach it. Publishing the same data as text on your site puts it within reach of any model reading you.

2. Technical speed and availability

Speed and availability have a direct effect on how well your content gets crawled and indexed. If a page takes more than three seconds to load, or if the site fails right in the middle of a high-demand window, there’s content that simply doesn’t get picked up.

For a university those peaks are predictable: semester start, enrollment deadlines, results announcements. They’re also the moments when the most people are looking for you. Keeping the site up on those days is as much a part of your GEO as any piece of metadata.

3. Topical authority and trust signals

Models learn to tell reliable sources apart. The signals they read look a lot like classic SEO ones: external mentions, information consistency across platforms, regular updates, and presence in specialized directories.

A university with published research, indexed press releases, active faculty profiles and movement on LinkedIn Education reaches models with far more material than a site that gets updated once a year. Web architecture plays a central role in this equation: what you publish counts, and so does the structure you publish it from.

4. GEO metadata: Schema, llms.txt and AI-readable content

This is the most technical element and also the one with the most room left. Models use specific protocols to understand a website, and none of them are visible to a human visitor.

Invisible on screen, decisive in the answer. It’s the layer with the best effort-to-result ratio on the whole list.

What to look at when you evaluate your platform

All four elements can be implemented in almost any CMS. The difference is how much sustained manual work they demand: every new page needs its Schema, every redesign can disturb existing metadata, and llms.txt has to be reviewed by hand.

So it’s worth asking your technology the same questions you’d ask a vendor:

  • Is Schema generated from the content structure, or written page by page by someone?
  • How long does it take your comms team to publish a new degree with all its metadata correct?
  • What happens to that metadata when you change the template?
  • Can you see, from one place, whether a program’s information is consistent across all your domains?

If the answers point to weeks of work and an external developer, you’ve found your bottleneck. For universities figuring out how to implement an effective GEO strategy, the technology decision and the strategy decision are the same conversation.

UCM Chile: the technical base that holds GEO up

Universidad Católica del Maule migrated three institutional portals to Griddo. The most visible result was traffic: +140% in organic visits. Behind that number sit the technical conditions that make it sustainable.
