## Verdict

Modern Campus CMS (formerly OU Campus, then Omni CMS) is the longest-standing CMS specialized in higher education, with customer support its own users rate very highly. But its two-stage XSLT architecture carries more than 25 years of inherited decisions, it is no longer sold as a Self-Host version, and every capability beyond the basic CMS is billed as a separate module.

*The longest-standing CMS in higher education, now SaaS only. Customization still depends on a template language that is increasingly hard to hire for.*

## Feature-by-feature comparison

| | Griddo | Modern Campus CMS | Advantage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Platform architecture | Headless / MACH — microservices, API-first, cloud-native from the origin. Content is served as a real-time API for any frontend. | Two-stage model: authoring in XML files on a staging server, publishing through an XSLT transformation (Java backend, Saxon processor) that generates static files pushed by FTP/SFTP to a separate production server. It is not headless: content is dumped as files on every publish, not served as a real-time API. | Griddo |
| Deployment model: SaaS or on-premises | Griddo Cloud (PaaS, managed by Griddo) or the Enterprise model, where the AWS infrastructure contract belongs to the university, which chooses the region. | Modern Campus no longer sells a Self-Host installation: its own support documentation confirms it — 'Modern Campus no longer sells Self-Host, we continue to provide support for existing Self-Host customers'. The authoring layer is SaaS-only for new customers; only the final production server can be hosted on campus as an alternative to the paid 'Modern Campus Hosting' service (managed on AWS). In addition, for Self-Host customers contracted before 1 January 2025, several modules (AI, Calendar, Forms, Personalization, Layout Builder, Website Search, Insights, among others) stopped being available on 30 June 2026, according to Modern Campus's own comparison table. | Griddo |
| Template customization and developer dependency | Embedded Design System and modular components, no code — editable by non-technical marketing and communications profiles. | Requires XSLT/XML for advanced customization. Multiple reviews from IT Directors on Capterra describe the language as 'not common in the industry' and hard to find in available developers. Layout Builder (the more recent low-code tool) reduces that dependency for new pages, but coexists with the classic XSL/TMPL template system — it does not replace it. | Griddo |
| Multisite governance | Native from the core: global and local data, one client runs 60 sites in 8 languages from a single instance. Adding a site requires no manual server configuration. | An 'Account' model with multiple 'Sites', each with explicit manual configuration of its own production/FTP server. Reviews document real cases managing up to 18 college websites and more than 100 active users from a single account, but TrustRadius notes that 'it is very difficult to split a site across several servers for load balancing'. | Griddo |
| Editorial permissions and roles | 6 configurable native roles, with permissions by content type, field, workflow stage and language — globally and per site. | 10 user levels with recursive per-folder permission inheritance, page checkout to a single editor, and action auditing. It is one of the product's 'top performing features' on TrustRadius: role-based permissions score 10/10 (+20% above the category average). | — |
| Visual editor / Author Experience | Live Author Experience — what you see in the editor is exactly what gets published, at any breakpoint. | A WYSIWYG editor rated easy to use 'once trained' on G2 and Capterra, but with repeated complaints of mismatch between the editing view and the published result: 'sometimes changes in edit mode look very different once published and it is not always easy to debug why' (G2). | Griddo |
| Form builder | Native Form Builder with conditional fields, multi-step forms and direct sync with HubSpot, Salesforce, Pipedrive and Zoho. | It is the lowest-rated feature of the whole platform in the structured TrustRadius comparison: the form builder scores 6.0/10, the only one below the category average. Reviews confirm that advanced needs require a paid external service (Formstack). | Griddo |
| Built-in AI features | AI Booster (translation, SEO, image tagging) and AI Search, native to the same platform, with no API keys of your own and no third-party connectors — one invoice. | AI Title & Description Generator, in beta, available only to SaaS customers, and requiring the institution to supply and pay for its own OpenAI API key. | Griddo |
| CRM, SIS and LMS integrations | Native connectors for Salesforce, HubSpot, Dynamics 365, Zoho and Pipedrive. Configurable webhooks for university SIS, LMS and ERPs. | Confirmed integrations with Salesforce.org Education Cloud, Slate (Technolutions) and the Ellucian Ethos framework for SIS. No open third-party marketplace: the 'CMS Snap Connectors' connect only Modern Campus's own suite products to each other. Third-party sources describe SIS integration as dependent on paid professional services to reconcile data after each academic term transition. A real, public example: the 2024 RFP from the University of Guam (a Modern Campus customer since 2018) shows the institution running its 227 forms through Formstack instead of the native form builder, keeping its campaign landing pages on HubSpot/WordPress alongside the CMS, and explicitly inviting 'proposals on applications and integration of CRM' — a sign that the integration was not natively solved. | Griddo |
| Initial implementation cost | Variable: depends on the scope of the project and the partner delivering it. Separately, the Cloud Enterprise model —where the university owns its cloud— carries a one-off €7,500 cloud setup fee. | No public pricing. A real contract (Sauk Valley Community College, 2023): $68,000 for initial implementation, plus add-on modules with a recurring unit price ($1,500–8,000/year each). | Griddo |
| 3-year TCO (mid-sized institution) | Platform cost calculable from the public pricing: from ~€54,000 (Institute, 1 site) to ~€180,000 (University, 9 sites) over three years. Implementation is separate and variable, depending on scope and delivery partner. | $141,168.75 documented in a real 3-year contract (Sauk Valley Community College, 2023) for a mid-sized institution, including implementation, a SaaS licence with 5% annual contractual escalation, and add-on modules billed separately. | Griddo |
| Availability SLA | 99.99% guaranteed by contract (Enterprise model) | 99.95% guaranteed on the paid 'Modern Campus Hosting' service (production on AWS), per a real contract (MiraCosta College, 2025) and confirmed in Modern Campus product documentation. | Griddo |
| Analyst recognition | No documented presence in independent analyst quadrants as of this comparison. | Gartner retired the Magic Quadrant for Web Content Management in 2020, replaced by a Market Guide with no public quantitative ranking. Modern Campus has not been found in independent analyst quadrants for DXP or CMS in 2026 — only user reviews on Gartner Peer Insights (3.4/5). | — |
| Customer support | SLA-backed technical support included in every plan, 24/7 monitoring and a dedicated Customer Success Manager in the Enterprise model. | It is the highest-rated feature of the whole platform in real user reviews: 4.8/5 on Capterra (the product's top score), repeatedly cited as a reason for contract renewal ('one of the reasons we continued with the company when time for renewal of contract' — TrustRadius). Modern Campus actively promotes it as 'award-winning support'. | Modern Campus CMS |

## Pricing comparison

| | Griddo | Modern Campus CMS |
|---|---|---|
| Entry price (tier with a fully functional site) | €1,500/month (Institute, 1 site) | No public pricing. Smallest documented real contract (Sauk Valley, tier up to 10 users): $7,500/year — but advanced forms, calendar and search are not included, and are billed as separate modules |
| Tier equivalent to multi-faculty governance | €5,000/month (University, 9 sites included) | Unlimited-user tier (Sauk Valley): $30,500/year — but there is no published tier for real multisite governance: each additional 'Site' is configured and billed independently under the contract |
| Initial implementation cost | Variable: depends on the scope of the project and the partner delivering it. Separately, the Cloud Enterprise model —where the university owns its cloud— carries a one-off €7,500 cloud setup fee. | $20,000–68,000 per a real contract (Sauk Valley, 2023): implementation by complexity tier ($20,000–60,000) plus content migration, from $3,000 (self-service) to $30,000+ (assisted high-volume migration) |
| Cost of AI features | Included in the plan (AI Booster) | The beta metadata generator requires the institution to supply and pay for its own OpenAI API key — a cost not included in the Modern Campus licence |
| 3-year TCO (mid-sized institution) | Platform cost calculable from the public pricing: from ~€54,000 (Institute) to ~€180,000 (University) over three years. Implementation is separate and variable | $141,168.75 documented (Sauk Valley Community College, real 2023 contract, mid-sized institution), with 5% annual contractual escalation and add-on modules billed on top of the base licence |

## Who each platform is for

**Griddo is ideal if…**

- Universities with several faculties, campuses or brands that need delegated multisite governance, without manually configuring a production server for every new site
- Teams that want to customize their site without depending on developers who know a template language that is increasingly scarce on the market (XSLT)
- Institutions that want predictable, published scaling costs, without discovering necessary additional modules after signing the contract

**Modern Campus CMS is a fit if…**

- Institutions with an in-house IT team willing to maintain their own XSLT/XML knowledge, and who value exceptional, personal customer support above all else
- Universities already using other Modern Campus suite products (Catalog, Curriculum, Career Pathways) that prioritize native integration within that same ecosystem
- Teams running one or a few sites (1–3) that do not need to scale complex multisite governance in the short term

## Frequently asked questions

### Can Modern Campus be installed on-premises, or does it only run in their cloud?

For new customers, it can no longer be installed as a fully self-managed on-premises product. Modern Campus's own support documentation confirms it: 'Modern Campus no longer sells Self-Host, we continue to provide support for existing Self-Host customers'. The CMS authoring layer is SaaS-only. The remaining flexibility is that the final production server (delivery of the public site) can be hosted on the university's own infrastructure, instead of buying the paid 'Modern Campus Hosting' service that Modern Campus manages on AWS.

### What happens to customers who already have the Self-Host version?

Modern Campus still supports legacy customers with their own installation, but it is a model closed to new sales and in functional wind-down: most modern modules (AI, Personalization, Calendar, Forms, Layout Builder, Insights, Website Search, Hosting) were never available for Self-Host, or stopped working for legacy Self-Host customers contracted before 1 January 2025 as of 30 June 2026, the cut-off date set by the vendor in its own official documentation.

### Do I need developers who know XSLT to customize my site in Modern Campus?

For template customization beyond what Layout Builder (the more recent low-code tool) allows, yes. Several reviews from IT Directors on Capterra agree: XSLT is 'not common in the industry' and 'it is very difficult to find developers familiar' with it. Layout Builder reduces that dependency for new pages built with the tool, but it coexists with the classic XSL/TMPL template system — it does not replace it in the existing installed base.

### What does Modern Campus really cost for a mid-sized university?

Modern Campus does not publish pricing. Using data from a real public contract (Sauk Valley Community College, 2023), the total 3-year cost for a mid-sized institution was $141,168.75, including $68,000 of initial implementation and a SaaS licence with 5% annual contractual escalation. Each additional module (calendar, forms, search, analytics) is billed separately, between $1,500 and $8,000 a year each.

### If we migrate from Modern Campus to Griddo, what happens to our current integrations (CRM, SIS)?

Griddo has native connectors for Salesforce, HubSpot, Dynamics 365, Zoho and Pipedrive, plus configurable webhooks for university SIS, LMS and ERP systems. If your current Modern Campus integration runs through Salesforce.org Education Cloud, Slate or Ellucian Ethos, Griddo can either sync natively with the same CRM or require an equivalent webhook integration for the student system.

### Is it true that Modern Campus support is among the best on the market?

Yes, and it should be said with the same honesty used to point out its limitations: customer support is the highest-rated feature of the whole platform in real reviews (4.8/5 on Capterra, the product's top score), and several users cite it explicitly as the reason they renewed their contract. It is a genuine strength that any alternative has to match or beat, not just criticize what Modern Campus does worse.
